Panorama-b’s multi-media tour „Berlin during the Third Reich“ was designed in cooperation with the Berlin Underworlds Association. It complements their permanent exhibition Mythos Germania, shown in their rooms at Gesundbrunnen underground station. The two-hours long tour is centered around Wilhelmstrasse, the government quarter of the former Reich capital, whose history and architecture is illustrated through video and audio clips as well as numerous historical photographs. The first tour stop introduces the redevelopment plans Adolf Hitler and Albert Speer had for Berlin. It focuses on the 6 kilometres long North-South Axis with the Great Hall as the architectural highlight. Moreover, 40 short descriptions of prominent Nazi buildings and building ensembles are integrated into our app, ...

The Topography of Terror (German: Topographie des Terrors) is an outdoor and indoor history museum in Berlin, Germany. It is located on Niederkirchnerstrasse, formerly Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse, on the site of buildings which during the Nazi regime from 1933 to 1945 were the headquarters of the Gestapo and the SS, the principal instruments of repression during the Nazi era.
Abandoned buildings and places awaken a curious fascination in us. Going deep into the hidden Berlin, a Berlin that seems to have forgotten part of its recent history, we visited abandoned buildings and places of the German city. Ciarán Fahey, a curious Irishman will tell the hidden history of these magical places, despised by some while causing a fascinating attraction to others. We reflect on the existence and nature of these spaces frozen in time and wonder about their uncertain future. Upper Eastside Berlin The Upper Eastside Berlin stands on one of Berlin's most prominent street corners, where Friedrichstrasse meets Unter den Linden. It offers upmarket residential and commercial space right where the heart of Berlin has been beating for the last 100 years, where the vibrant bustle of Germany's capital city merges with the charm of its international guests to create an atmosphere of excitement and inspiration. With their design for the Upper Eastside Berlin, the architectural offices von Gerkan, Marg und Partner (gmp), Kahlfeldt and Burelli strived to retain the unique character of this locality while at the same time providing a leading-edge place to work. Their intensive collaboration gave rise to five highly individual buildings that together make up a harmonious sin...

The Reichstag building is a historical edifice in Berlin, Germany, constructed to house the Imperial Diet, of the German Empire. This imposing building houses the Federal German Parliament or "Bundestag" and was originally completed in 1894 to meet the need of the newly-unified German Empire of the Kaisers' for a larger parliamentary building. The Reichstag was intended to resemble a Renaissance palace, and its architect, Paul Wallot, dedicated the building to the German people. The Nazi leader Adolf Hitler exploited the fire which gutted the Reichstag building in 1933 by blaming the Communists for the arson and for attempted revolution. There is good evidence to suggest, however, that his followers were actually responsible and that this was a manufactured crisis. When German reunificat...
Esra Akcan's lecture defines "openness" as a foundational modern value albeit prone to contradictions, and open architecture as the translation of the ethics of hospitality into architecture. It particularly focuses on a single street corner in Berlin, at Checkpoint Charlie, where the stories of an Italian architect, a Spanish architect collective, a Turkish guest worker, and a Kurdish refugee met during the time of Kreuzberg’s urban renewal in the 1980s. This case will be treated both as an example of the IBA’1984/87—a building exhibition of mostly social housing for which the Berlin Senate invited a large number of established and cutting-edge international architects—and as a prism of the notion of open architecture as collectivity.

Welcome to Berlin, the capital city of Germany. The first documentation of Berlin appears in the 13th century, and it has a long history of importance—it’s been the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg and the Kingdom of Prussia, among others. The lengthy history encompassing the city often manifests in its eclectic collection of architecture, which you should certainly include on your Berlin tour. From the towering classical lines of Charlottenburg Palace, built for the Hohenzollern family in the 17th century, to the sleek mirrored sides of the Bahn Tower, you’re bound to find plenty to look at in the city’s downtown area. Fancy a real German lager? Stop by Prater Garten for a brew—built in 1837, it’s one of the handful of buildings that has survived both World Wars. You can sit ou...

Travel video about destination Berlin in Germany. Berlin is Germany's modern capital city, a fascinating European metropolis with a dramatic history in which contemporary architecture merges with the imposing character of a centuries-old city. The Nokolai Quarter was built by the DDR government as a sort of old town, a European Disneyland for the city's 750th anniversary, a popular area with 'new' medieval buildings that display various guilds and stone statues that surround the city's oldest church. We travel to nearby Potsdam, a city of castles and gardens and with an old town that features a lively market atmosphere. When the monarchy settled there, so did their armies and with them came craftsmen, merchants and artists from many countries. The castle-like Nauener Tor leads to the Rus...
