A short film documenting the construction of the Berlin Wall, featuring interviews with people who were affected by it.
Panorama-b’s multi-media tour „Berlin during the Third Reich“ was designed in cooperation with the Berlin Underworlds Association. It complements their permanent exhibition Mythos Germania, shown in their rooms at Gesundbrunnen underground station. The two-hours long tour is centered around Wilhelmstrasse, the government quarter of the former Reich capital, whose history and architecture is illustrated through video and audio clips as well as numerous historical photographs. The first tour stop introduces the redevelopment plans Adolf Hitler and Albert Speer had for Berlin. It focuses on the 6 kilometres long North-South Axis with the Great Hall as the architectural highlight. Moreover, 40 short descriptions of prominent Nazi buildings and building ensembles are integrated into our app, ...
Abandoned buildings and places awaken a curious fascination in us. Going deep into the hidden Berlin, a Berlin that seems to have forgotten part of its recent history, we visited abandoned buildings and places of the German city. Ciarán Fahey, a curious Irishman will tell the hidden history of these magical places, despised by some while causing a fascinating attraction to others. We reflect on the existence and nature of these spaces frozen in time and wonder about their uncertain future. The Sony Center Berlin at Potsdamer Platz belongs to the most spectacular new buildings in Berlin since the reunification. The Sony Center is a complex of 7 different buildings, including the DB Tower. From the outside, the center shows a triangular shape, with the DB Tower at the top. Inside is an oval square for public use. Between the buildings you have direct access to the surrounding streets. The square is spanned by a fan-shaped tent roof, which is attached to a steel ring that lies on the surrounding buildings. The steel construction was built by the Austrian steel construction company Waagner-Biro. It symbolizes the holy mountain of Mount Fuji which is the residence of the Kami (divinities). The Sony center shall offer the Kami another place of residence in Europe. In this complex...

Sonia Gil takes a stroll through Karl Marx Allee and the famous AlexanderPlatz in search of the architecture and the energy of old communist Berlin. She finds a bit of everything from calls for a revolution to a McDonald's restaurant in a Stalinist building. The new East Berlin is here to stay. Amazing music from the album Clear by Alex Lasarenko.
Construction of the building began well after the unification of Germany in 1871. Previously, the parliament had assembled in several other buildings in Leipziger Straße in Berlin but these were generally considered too small, so in 1872 an architectural contest with 103 participating architects was carried out to erect a new building. After a short survey of possible sites, a parliamentary committee recommended the east side of the Königsplatz (today, Platz der Republik), which however was occupied by the palace of a Polish-Prussian aristocrat, Athanasius Raczyński.
German/Nat The historic Kaisersaal ('Emperor's Hall') of the Grand Hotel Esplanade in Berlin,, one of only two buildings in the city to survive the destruction of World War Two, was moved - in its entirety -to a new location Wednesday - in order to make room for a road. It seems there are no limits to the ever-changing face of Berlin. On Wednesday, the 'Emperor's Hall' of Berlins once-famous Hotel Esplanade continued its 75 meter journey across Potsdamer Platz to a new resting place. Since last Friday, the 1,300 ton coloss has been on the move, but due to technical difficulties, the first attempt had to be interrupted after a mere 7 and a half meters. Today's longest leg of 45 meters, however, was completed without a hitch. The building, dating back to the turn of th...
The Allied air raids on Berlin in World War II were flown by British, American and some French bombers, also there were some Soviet air raids on Berlin. Overall, there were 310 air raids on Berlin. The first air raid took place in the night of 7th on the 8th June 1940. Given the experience of the First World War, the fear of an attack with chemical weapons was still high and the population was asked during the air raids to wear respirators because they feared the use of gas bombs. On the same night, an industrial district was attacked by a French aircraft. On 25 August, the Royal Air Force attacked for the first time in Berlin. One day before, the German Air Force had for the first time dropped bombs on London during the Battle of Britain. The British had by then deliberately not attacked ...
Esra Akcan's lecture defines "openness" as a foundational modern value albeit prone to contradictions, and open architecture as the translation of the ethics of hospitality into architecture. It particularly focuses on a single street corner in Berlin, at Checkpoint Charlie, where the stories of an Italian architect, a Spanish architect collective, a Turkish guest worker, and a Kurdish refugee met during the time of Kreuzberg’s urban renewal in the 1980s. This case will be treated both as an example of the IBA’1984/87—a building exhibition of mostly social housing for which the Berlin Senate invited a large number of established and cutting-edge international architects—and as a prism of the notion of open architecture as collectivity.
The Reichstag building is a historical edifice in Berlin, Germany, constructed to house the Imperial Diet, of the German Empire. This imposing building houses the Federal German Parliament or "Bundestag" and was originally completed in 1894 to meet the need of the newly-unified German Empire of the Kaisers' for a larger parliamentary building. The Reichstag was intended to resemble a Renaissance palace, and its architect, Paul Wallot, dedicated the building to the German people. The Nazi leader Adolf Hitler exploited the fire which gutted the Reichstag building in 1933 by blaming the Communists for the arson and for attempted revolution. There is good evidence to suggest, however, that his followers were actually responsible and that this was a manufactured crisis. When German reunificat...

This scary abandoned building was a former Woman's tuberculosis Hospital (TB Clinic) or 'Frauen-Lungenheilgebäude' in Germany. This single building is part of a huge hospital complex known as Beelitz-Heilstätten, and was designed by architect Heino Schmieden and built in 1898 close to Potsdam, Berlin Originally built as a tuberculosis sanatorium this massive complex was converted into a military hospital during World War I. Adolph Hitler was treated at this hospital (although probably not this building) in October of 1916 for a leg wound received from British shelling during the Battle of Somme. Honecker was also a former patient during this Hospitals war-time history. I explored several buildings on my visit to Beelitz-Heilstätten, and made a couple of videos along the way. I will up...

Welcome to Berlin, the capital city of Germany. The first documentation of Berlin appears in the 13th century, and it has a long history of importance—it’s been the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg and the Kingdom of Prussia, among others. The lengthy history encompassing the city often manifests in its eclectic collection of architecture, which you should certainly include on your Berlin tour. From the towering classical lines of Charlottenburg Palace, built for the Hohenzollern family in the 17th century, to the sleek mirrored sides of the Bahn Tower, you’re bound to find plenty to look at in the city’s downtown area. Fancy a real German lager? Stop by Prater Garten for a brew—built in 1837, it’s one of the handful of buildings that has survived both World Wars. You can sit ou...

Travel video about destination Berlin in Germany. Berlin is Germany's modern capital city, a fascinating European metropolis with a dramatic history in which contemporary architecture merges with the imposing character of a centuries-old city. The Nokolai Quarter was built by the DDR government as a sort of old town, a European Disneyland for the city's 750th anniversary, a popular area with 'new' medieval buildings that display various guilds and stone statues that surround the city's oldest church. We travel to nearby Potsdam, a city of castles and gardens and with an old town that features a lively market atmosphere. When the monarchy settled there, so did their armies and with them came craftsmen, merchants and artists from many countries. The castle-like Nauener Tor leads to the Rus...

Our host Kavita takes a look at the food from the New Berlin. After the Berlin Wall came down, Berlin experienced great change as artists from all over the world visited, restaurants and bars opened, and the food culture modernized. Kavita meets Wally, an expat living in Berlin since the 90s, who has experienced the change firsthand and has the stories to tell about it. She then visits Koreans living in Berlin who have mixed their culture with German traditions, then finally heads to Nobelhart & Schmutzig, where German food gets reinvented. If its your first visit in the city, then your to do list will be very long. Although most of the city got destroyed during world war 2, the city has managed to revamp most of its historic areas. This process got stronger after the fall of Berlin wall, so today you can see many of the famous historic attractions of the city standing once again. Your must see attractions should include the German parliament known as the Reichstag. Another important sight is the Brandenburg gate which used to stand on the border between east Berlin and west berlin during the cold war...but the biggest symbol of that period is the famous Berlin Wall. Most of it was destroyed, but you can still see a 220 metre section of it as part of the Berlin wall memorial.
